Digital Leadership 6-Part Short Course: Infrastructure Digital Twins
By Dan Raker, ConnectPress

For the past year we’ve been covering the emergence of Infrastructure Digital Twins for MicroStation Connections members. Now we pull these resources together in one Digital Leadership Short Course accessible to everyone.

Thanks for starting your Infrastructure Digital Twin journey by building your knowledge base with this Course. For this Short Course we use Bentley Systems’ iTwinTM Services to illustrate concepts.

1. Infrastructure Digital Twins – What's it all about?
Welcome to the Infrastructure Digital Twins Leadership Short Course. This six-part series is written with you in mind: empowering development and implementation of digital twin in your organization. Leadership starts with knowledge. Thanks for starting your Infrastructure Digital Twin journey by building your knowledge base with this Course.

Per Bentley Systems, "Bentley's Infrastructure Digital Twins combine engineering data, reality data, and IoT data for a holistic view of infrastructure above and below ground. Immersive visualization and analytics visibility help you achieve a deeper understanding of your infrastructure assets—so you make better-informed decisions for better outcomes."

2. Infrastructure Digital Twins – Why Now?
In part one we studied examples of Infrastructure Digital Twins and defined what a twin is.

In this part two, we answer the question, "Why now?" The quick answer is that a convergence of technology; digitization in both the design and management of infrastructure; and increasing demand for timely, cost-effective development, renewal and operation of infrastructure now allow for and demand the use of digital twins.

3. Infrastructure Digital Twins– Are You Ready?
In part three, we answer the question, "Are you ready?" How do you lead an organizational digital transformation by channeling existing, non-integrated departments, data and processes into unified twins?

This Course part relies heavily on the work Bentley Systems has done to find best practices fundamental to increasing stakeholder's participation and value by sifting through customer experience on their journey toward Infrastructure Digital Twins.

4. Infrastructure Digital Twins–Alignment
Part four covers aligning disparate data so it can be shared by all stakeholders while still allowing best-in-class applications to build and maintain that data. Part five makes sense of the growing body of 'open' resources necessary for digital twins to operate.

Underlying all good infrastructure is rigorous applied engineering. Since the dawn of computing, the development of engineering-related software demanded an equal rigor to balance productivity and efficiency with the truth necessary for professional responsibility and liability. Engineers have learned to trust engineering software through rigorous testing and by working with good software development companies.

5. Infrastructure Digital Twins– Open
If you have been reading along in this Course, by now you probably are convinced that Infrastructure Digital Twins require the efforts beyond what a single user, application or vendor can pull together on their own. This raises the questions: Who do I team up with? How do I team up with another stakeholder? How do I protect my investment as I share data, applications, bridges and knowledge with others?

Key to successful Infrastructure Digital Twin implementation is the concept of Open. Open means different things to many users.

6. Infrastructure Digital Twins
Infrastructure Digital Twins represent a journey for all stakeholders. The living definition of twins implies that all stakeholders are on this journey together without an endpoint.

Does that make it a fool's errand? Quite the opposite. All the stakeholders are wanting the benefits that twins can and do yield. This is the living dividend for our twin investment.

The goal is efficiency, cost control, advances that will only yield savings in money, the environment, resources, hours worked, safety, more.

An important side benefit to all of this saving is reduction in liability. It will not be long before the day when not having an Infrastructure Digital Twin becomes a liability.
